This update is probably more exciting for our Mac users, as we have reworked the editors for plain text and formatted documents in Notebooks for Mac, to make them more like what you would expect on a Mac. But we are sure that our Windows users will like the update as well. The detailed changes in each version are available in the version history for Mac and Windows and also in the included Readme file. So if you want to jump right in, you find the download links below.

For the first time we now have a separate version for users who are still using Mac OX 10.6; they won’t get all of the new and more interesting features, but still, they will have some news and improvements as well.

Your comments and feedback are welcome.

This version doesn’t run on Windows 7 64-bit 🙁 What have you done?

Oh, this is bad news… Does it make a difference if you start Notebooks.exe directly from the “Notebooks Package” folder instead of clicking the shortcut? If that still does not help, what error message do you get?

I just tested the new release Win XP and Win 8 (I don’t have Win 7 available right now) and both run fine, so I wonder what could be wrong with Win 7…

Ah!! Yes, thank you Alfons, the exe inside the Notebooks Package folder works just fine, panic over! I have pinned it to the task bar and all is as it should be. Not sure what the “Notebooks.exe” in the root folder is for but to be honest I don’t care, just happy to have a working version. Thanks for the quick reply!

I am glad to hear that it was nothing “more serious” 🙂

The Notebooks.exe at the top level actually is a shortcut to “Notebooks Package/Notebooks.exe”. We wanted to provide our users with a cleaner package, without the .dll files prominently lying around, but we’ll have to take a look at this again…

    Hello,
thank you for the new Version. one question: is it possible to fix the sort order of the notes from ascending to descending as Default.
after closing it is always on ascending

    thanks

      Hi Dieter,

This is one of the remaining open loops. The iOS versions if Notebooks allow you to set the preferred sort order per book, but the desktop versions currently ignore that. This is something we will take care of.

      Hi Jorge,

are you inserting the photo into a formatted document? How do you do that, by drag & drop or via the “insert image” icon in the toolbar?

hello, sorry to be that late to reply.

I tried both with “copy” and “paste” and by drag and drop.

Both times from safari. I also tried just now to add the picture from the available button. It does work from there. My guess is that the app is not copying the picture correctly, instead it is trying to link it and maybe safari is giving a weird path.

        1. DRAG AND DROP FROM SAFARI

        2. APP BUTTON

that’s the html your app generates, if it helps you.

I really need the drag and drop feature from browser…

        P.S.
I bought both your ipad and iphone apps. IMHO your app is the best one i’ve found, and you should put more ads or something, it took me ages to find it. Maybe its because its not translated to spanish (my language here in spain). I can help with that if you feel you want to make it available in spanish.

sorry, the html code was ignored!!!

here it is without the tags

          1. src=”NBImages/130902-203538.png” (by the add picture button)

          2. src=”webkit-fake-url://F39A36C1-B0B7-4C8E-9C9A-3DC5FD85510D/image.tiff” (by drag and drop or copy/paste)

Yes, it is this “webkit-fake-url” that is causing the problem. When you drag&drop an image from Safari, it provides this URL instead of something “usable” for us. – I remember, we had a similar issue on iOS and found a solution, so I am positive that we can handle this on Mac OS as well.

As a workaround you could drag the image to your desktop and from there drag it into Notebooks, that should work.

I agree on what you say about marketing… A Spanish version of NB for iPad is in preparation, but just out of curiosity: which are the search terms you would use when searching the App Store for an app like Notebooks?)

Hi. I just updated Notebooks and tried to put an image into a rich text doc and I tried drag and drop and importing and no image appeared.
I’d also like to put in a request for NB Mac to have all the timestamp options that NB iOS has. Thanks.
Also-Is there a way yet on NB Mac to import from pasteboard?

        Hi Robert,

could it be that you are having the same issue as Jorge (drag & drop from Safari)?

Yes, a larger selection of timestamps will become available for NB/Mac as well; the preferences still require a major update.
New from pasteboard is in preparation but not yet available.

Is there any plans to support the dates from the .plist files for sorting (say by created date) rather than sorting based on the file date.

When I sync the files to a new computer, they never sort in the order I intend (i.e. descending by date so the newest are on top).

    Thanks,
    Ed

You are correct, NB/Mac currently still uses the file system’s creation date, not the one from the plist. We need to take care of that. Thank you for pointing this out!

    Hi again, new bug?

I’m trying to sync using my own webdav server (synology nas), it connects, and download and upload correctly, however if i delete a note in any of my devices, another one will upload it on the next sync…

to avoid any issues, i’m using webdav on all my devices (laptop and desktop too), however i’d like to use my regular CloudStation (dropbox-like) folder on both laptop and desktop.

    am i missing something?

    Regards

    P.S.
As of now i’m testing just on my iphone and desktop mac (imac)

      Hi Jorge,

please take a look at the WebDAV settings in Notebooks on your iPhone; could it be that “Sync Moves and Deletes” is turned off? If so, turn that option on and the deleted documents should no longer reappear.

      Hope that fixes this this…

I just wanted to tell you that this app is EXACTLY what I’m looking for. Thank you for your hard work!

One thing I noticed is that links with parentheses within the link text seem to be broken. For example, if my markdown text includes:

    “[Results and Conclusions](skimmer:///Users/Shannon/Dropbox/Papers/Articles/Supplemental/2008_Dong_Macromolecules_ARGET_ATRP_of_2-(Dimethylamino)ethyl_Methacrylate_as_an_Intrinsic_Reducing_Agent-1.pdf#page=1)”

    it shows up as:
    “Results and Conclusionsethyl_Methacrylate_as_an_Intrinsic_Reducing_Agent-1.pdf#page=1)”

In other words, the parentheses are not matching up correctly. Tried this markdown in other editors and it seems to work fine.

Thanks again for what you do and for your help!

Thanks a lot for your feedback, it is great to hear you like Notebooks 🙂

Regarding the link: the problem in fact are the parentheses; as a quick fix you can escape the parentheses by preceding them with “\” and you will see that the link will be correctly converted.

      Best regards,
      Alfons

    (1) Drag-and-dropping images from the desktop doesn’t work
    (2) Can’t reposition an image (added through Insert Image in the toolbar) inside a document – it just turns the image into its file name and nothing happens.

      Hi Lukas,

      1) drag & drop for images will be available in the next update (we have already implemented that)
      2) this is something we are still working on, we will try to provide that as soon as possible.

I have been looking for a Mac/iPad/iPhone app that will sync over the internet and not only via WiFi for long time.

I just loaded and I like it.
I was using Bento up to recently but apple decided not to supported any more since iOS7
I did not like Evernote. Simple note will not do formating and this is all I ever wanted.
    Thanks

It seems that the Notebooks/Mac can not be used offline like the iOS counterparts. Are there plans for the Mac/Win products to sync from a local folder to WebDav/Dropbox/etc rather than opening the file in /volumes/?

      Hi Lee,

well, when you use Notebooks/Mac together with Dropbox you actually do have offline capabilities. All your edits and changes take place in a local directory and it is the Dropbox app on your Mac that takes care of synchronizing your documents when you are online. When offline, the changes remain in the local directory, and as soon as you get online again, Dropbox starts to sync. This is one of the convenient features of Dropbox. – We won’t have that for WebDAV, unless, of course, you use a local WebDAV server on your Mac.

Notebooks for Windows question: is there any way to remove the background pattern in Plain Text view? Thank you!

    • October 31, 2013 at 8:38 am
      Permalink

      Hi Irina,

to remove the background pattern, you just need to define a “Background Color” instead. To do that globally, open Notebooks’ settings, switch to Fonts&Colors and pick a background color (white, for example). After confirming your selection and closing the settings window, all your documents should have a plain white background.
(Individual background patterns or colors that you may have set for a specific book or documents will override this global setting).

      I hope this helps.
      Best,
      Alfons
