Notebooks 8.6.3 contains stability improvements and corrects issues that were reported by our users. Thanks a lot to all of you for your feedback.

Formatted Documents

  • The flickering effect when tapping the text to start editing has been eliminated.
  • The Formatting buttons appear with a smoother animation and avoid extra scrolling.
  • On iPad Pro in split view, the extra keyboard keys show up as expected.
  • Opening “Look Up” to find a definition while editing no longer terminates the editing session.

Markdown

  • Reliably convert very long Markdown documents.
  • We addressed a potential crash when using automatic Markdown detection in combination with automatic Dropbox sync.
  • Resolve an issue when the title contains umlauts on iOS 10.3.3.

Misc

  • Select the correct file extension when importing from other apps (avoid .file-url).
  • Using “Apply Current Style” for multiple books or duplicating books works as expected again.
  • Renaming a PDF document no longer produces the “Document not available” message.
  • When editing a document with an external keyboard on an iPhone, the toolbar no longer overlaps the text.

I love Notebooks! I use it for all of my lesson plans.
Are all of my documents backed up on iCloud? I would be devistated if I lost all of my work.
    Thank you!

      Hi Pat,

whenever you back up your iPad or iPhone through iTunes or through iCloud, the contents of Notebooks is backed up as well. So you can always restore the documents.
Still, you could consider setting up synchronization with Dropbox or with a WebDAV server. That gives you an extra backup, and your documents are easily accessible from your computer, too. You find more details at

      https://www.notebooksapp.com/ios/sync-dropbox and
      https://www.notebooksapp.com/ios/sync-webdav

      Best,
      Alfons

Hi, I’ve been using Notebooks 6 forever. I’m getting messages that I need to upgrade. How do I do that? Just get the new app? Will my current info be loaded into the new app or should I sync from Dropbox? Thanks!

I am going to download your program for my iPad(s)… but even if I don’t yet have it… I have a feature request to make it better for my editing-intensive line of work.
I am a translator (screenplays, treatments and synopses), so the process is:
Read a portion of the original, tap in the translation, forward-delete the old. (again and again).
So… to avoid all the finger-painting and screen-poking I kindly request the implementation of one button – call it [§]
    that obeys the following command:

“Check the value to the immediate left of the cursor position, return in place and cancel rightward up to and including that same value, case insensitive.”

This one little button would pay huge dividends:

    • Single word deletion – 1 touch – also consecutive action
(connects space before word with space after)

    • Single paragraph deletion – 1 touch – also consecutive action
(there is an optionally visible pilcrow before and after every paragraph, so with the cursor at head of paragraph, a tap on [§] will zap that paragraph in one fell swoop.

    • Anywhere in para. to end of same para. – 2 touches
Hit ENTER (RETURN) where you wish to end the paragraph and then [§]

    • Any punctuation mark / symbol – 2 touches – consecutive action
Need to cancel to the end of the sentence? Instead if highlighting up to and EXCLUDING the period. YOU tap in a period and then hit [§]
Same goes for all other punctuation marks and symbols.

    • Cancel to any word – “X” amount of touches, but in the normal ambit of handhelds (whose screen real estate is by its nature circumscribed) quite efficient – meaning fewer taps and on fewer different buttons than iA Writer.

So far this method which I call Connective Writing has hd one “partial” implementation in iOS sphere… for a program called Textkraft pro.

    https://www.infovole.de/en/this-and-that/more-freedom-for-translators-with-textkraft/

They call it “extended forward delete”… I only mention it to underscore the fact that it’s DOABLE….

Here is what I envisioned for a hypothetical Nokia phablet (Android sphere)
Here I ask for two buttons (the second one is to improve word connection. Plus a hardware synergy.

    Thank you

      Dear Steven,

thanks a lot for your suggestion. I must admit, we had never thought of such advanced functionality ourselves, but I see that it would make editing on iOS devices much more efficient. I have added your request to our list of ideas, and we will see what we can do 😉

      Best regards,
      Alfons

    Dankeschoen Alfons,
Especially for not sending me to hell for making a feature request before even purchasing your program!
I’m traveling and have consumed my internet allowance, but Monday Notebooks will be mine.
It looks like a marvelous app. For my particular needs the rich text handling would be great.
I already have another feature request… far simpler than connective editing. In your word/character counter, for a translator / editor like me, the offset value would be very useful. In other words the word/character value of the current cursor location.
Thanks you again, and REALLY look forward to working productively on Notebooks.
