Notebooks 8.9.2 is a minor update providing a few enhancements and corrections.

Enhancements

  • Super- and subscript options for formatted documents are available as extra keyboard keys (if screen size allows), and from the edit popup menu.
  • When using Notebooks’ extra keyboard keys, pending autocorrections are automatically accepted (rather than rejected as before). Moreover, Notebooks tries to avoid that the autocorrection popup is hidden below the on screen keyboard.
  • The setting for an item’s color label has been moved to a more prominent section.

Corrections

  • On smaller screens, the PDF Reader now displays the action button in the toolbar, rather than the bookmark button; bookmarks can be manipulated from the action menu, so this seems like the more flexible option.
  • A glitch when inserting the current position on an iPhone has been addressed.
  • We slightly tweaked the way extra keys work to make sure that custom keys like […][] are correctly interpreted.

Thank you for your continued support, feedback and reports. If you run into any issues, please let us know.

This update is available for download on the App Store.

After “Connective Editing” and the whole marvelous extra keyboard row, I feel like an ingrate asking for more… Today – under the pressure of the usual “faux emergency” I will be translating 8000 words of a screenplay… most of them on an iPAD Mini with Notebooks, which is a productivity powerhouse.

But there are times, when, on account of the type of translation work I’m involved in… I must use the old program that only had [§]. Why?

Because I must work simultaneously with two open files. And I can access them more seamlessly with a slide over function. Notebooks, which knocks the socks off that program in many different ways, is not nearly as efficient at going back and forth.

So… my request is… if possible… to tell Noteboks: I want this file and that file to be in focus… and I want to go back and forth FAST between them and I want both immediately editable and FULL SCREEN.

The need arises rather frequently (new drafts of the same screenplay, etc.)

Then… I’m not asking for it, but I’m asking (contorted Italian logic)… I want to save in RTF… I’m not asking because I save in Markdown and then use another App to obtain the rtf… but, I’m asking because… why should I leave the best editing program for translators on planet earth?

      Hi Steven,

the closest we can offer in Notebooks’ standard is the 2up mode, where you can view and edit two documents side by side, without going back and forth. Of course, you cannot edit the documents in full screen that way…

Alternatively, you could use Notebooks’ “Recent items” smart book. You open one document, then the other. Now they are both listed as recent items, and if you open the recent items book now, they are at the top of the list. Select the first, switch to full screen, edit; hide the keyboard, swipe to the other document, edit in full screen, and so on…
The same works with contexts, maybe even better: you assign a context @WiP to these documents and open the book Contexts > @WiP, where you find these two documents. The rest works as above.

That said, I am afraid you are actually asking for document tabs 😉

    Hi Alfons,

Unfortuntely on my iPAD at least, version 8.9.2 has broken the background display on plain text notes, so I no longer see the lined paper background. I have tried changing the background image and turning this on and off, but the notes all just appear on a plain white background.
Thank you for all of your great work,

    Mark

      Hi Mark,

thank you for pointing this out. We made a slight change in the way Notebooks retrieves background colors and patterns, with the intention to simplify things, but it seems that something went a little wrong… We’ll take care of it!

      Best,
      Alfons

I really would like to use color labels with the Dark theme but it only seems to work when dark is disabled..

      Hi Eric,

we do have that on our todo list. Maybe we will show the label as bullet rather than coloring the whole cell, we’ll see.

      Best,
      Alfons
