Two months ago we released the previous beta version of Notebooks for Mac/PC, which is about to expire now. Time has passed too quickly for us and we have not been able to finalize and test the (fundamental) changes we have been working on, which means that we don’t yet have any news and changes for you. This, however, should not keep you from working with Notebooks for Mac and PC; the downloads we provide from the links below are exactly the same as last time, except for the changed expiration date.

Within the next few weeks we expect to complete the changes we are working on and we will provide you with an update then. Notebooks for Mac/PC will automatically notify you as soon as a new version is ready for download.

Thank you for your patience and for all the feedback, ideas and requests you sent us. You are always welcome to send us an email or post your comments right here.

Nice app so far. I think you need a few more things to make just great – basically try to provide an alternative to Evernote. This is what I think would be crucial:

    – Editing: support checkboxes (with state saving)
    – Editing: support tables
    – Notes: support tagging

    These are nice to have:

    – Notes: support attachments
    – Notes: support note references/links

    This would be awesome:

    – support importing Evernote exports

THE IMAGE EDITING FEATURE FOR NOTEBOOKS FOR PC APPLICATION WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.
AUTO-SYNC FOR IPAD APPLICATION WILL ALSO GREAT

      Hi Anil,

I cannot promise anything regarding the image editing features, but auto sync for iPad (as long as you are using Dropbox) is already there…

I like the fact that the iPad and desktop (Mac in my case) have very similar interfaces. It makes the transition from one to the other nice. My concerns are twofold:
    1) Due to the nature of my work I would like/need a stronger security paradigm employed (preferably encryption).
    2) If using a non-private cloud service (DropBox or Apple iCloud) then #1 becomes much more important
The thing that I really appreciate is the fact that most (if not all) formatting is preserved between the IOS and desktop devices.

It is great to hear you like Notebooks! – I agree that security is becoming increasingly important and I am happy to inform you that we are already working on encryption in Notebooks. With encryption turned on, documents will not be readable when synced to Dropbox or another cloud service; the password is only known by the user, not by any of the involved systems.

      Best,
      Alfons

I just wanted to encourage you. I use Notebooks extensively on my iPad and backup to my mac through Dropbox. Now I have the convience of editing from my mac also. I just love it! Thanks. Please finalize the OS x version as soon as you can. You are doing a great job.

      Dear John,

thanks a lot for your encouragement! We are working hard on finalizing version 1.0 of Notebooks for Mac. Another beta should be ready around the end of this month, but if all goes well, this should be the last before we send Notebooks off to the App Store 🙂

      Best,
      Alfons

Just downloading the pc beta now and just wondered if after the beta it will stay or free, or will there be a charge?

I am currently using the ipad version and probably going to get the iphone version soon.

      Hi Ed,

when Notebooks for PC reaches version 1.0 it won’t be free anymore…

Thanks, just trying to use the beta now, managed to download and install but no icon appears so the only way to use is use the .exe – am I missing something?

I also can’t get the pc to sync across to my ipad notes even after changing all the settings I can find?

        Am I doing something wrong?

Starting the .exe currently is the way to launch Notebooks. If you want you can create an alias in the desktop or your favorite location to quickly access Notebooks.

The easiest way to sync Notebooks/PC with Notebooks on the iPad is via Dropbox. The included Readme has more details about how to set it up.

Thanks, I have the ipad version synced to dropbox but can find no sync option on the pc version?

            I clicked save.

I have deleted all notebooks for pc data so its blanked and have my ipad version synced to dropbox but nothing comes across to the pc version?

You just need to install the Dropbox app on your PC. This creates a folder on you computer which is automatically synced with Dropbox. In this folder you find a subfolder “Notebooks”, which contains the documents synced from your iPad. Now select this folder as root folder for Notebooks/PC (you do that in Notebooks’ preferences), and all changes you make in Notebooks/PC are automatically synced to Dropbox, from where they find their way to the iPad.

Thanks for the help – works now, one last question that seems to be important.

Using an ipad 1st generation so stuck with ios5, will you keep supporting that?

Well, with iOS 7 and all its changes coming up I am afraid we won’t be able to support iOS 5 forever (supporting multiple iOS versions makes things increasingly complex, which compromises an app’s reliability). Notebooks 6 and its minor updates will remain iOS 5 compatible, but I cannot promise that for Notebooks 7…

Please at least provide an update for the Mac/PC versions. I have been waiting for this application for a while. When will final release of these versions be available?

        Hi Nana,

the next update for Notebooks Mac/PC is due next week. If all goes well, this will be the last beta before the final release.
