When Notebooks stores its documents in iCloud Drive, there may be situations where iCloud repeatedly attempts to synchronize a large number of files. During this process, Notebooks may respond slowly, appear stuck while syncing, or in some cases even fail to launch.
This usually happens because iCloud keeps some documents only in the cloud and downloads them on demand when Notebooks tries to access them. To resolve this, make sure that all of Notebooks’ documents are fully downloaded and available locally.
Download All Documents Locally
On iPhone or iPad
- Open the Files app.
- Navigate to iCloud Drive.
- Locate the Notebooks folder.
- Tap and hold the folder.
- Select Download Now from the popup menu.
On Mac
- Open a new Finder window.
- Navigate to iCloud Drive.
- Locate the Notebooks folder.
- Right-click the folder.
- Select Download Now.
iCloud will now begin downloading all documents stored in the folder. Depending on the number and size of your documents, this may take some time.
Once the download has completed, Notebooks should launch normally again and respond much faster.

Prevent Future Delays
To reduce the likelihood of this happening again, open the same popup menu once more and select Keep Downloaded.
This tells iOS or macOS to keep local copies of your documents available, instead of automatically removing files that are not used regularly.
