Just in time before the previous beta expires, here is the next update for you. It adds another set of enhancements and corrects most of the issues that were reported. The full list of additions, improvements and fixes is available from the details pages for the Mac and Win versions.

If all goes well, this should be the last in our series of betas before Notebooks reaches the final version 1.0. – After almost two years it is about time, isn’t it?

What you see in beta 14 is not quite the final release, though. We still keep a few features up our sleeve… 1.0 should be something special after all 😉

Thank you for sticking with us! Your comments and feedback are welcome.

Update for Mavericks Users – Dec 18th, 1720GMT

The version we uploaded two days ago showed a small interface issue when using the background patterns for plain text. We have fixed that and just uploaded a new binary. So, if you are using Notebooks on Mavericks and downloaded beta 14 earlier today or yesterday, you might want to download it again. – Sorry for the inconvenience!

    Enjoying the update!

Is there any way to setup the bookmarklet to work in Chrome in any way?

I also still can’t seem to get the recent documents to show up on Windows.

        Hi Steven,

there are two locations to access recent items: from the File menu and from the clock icon in the toolbar below the document. Don’t you get a list of items either way?

On a Mac, the procedure for setting up the bookmarklet in Chrome should be very similar to the procedure described in the Import section of our site. On Windows, however, we noticed that Notebooks does not correctly register for the notebooks:// links; we’ll have to fine tune that a bit…

    Hi,

is there a way to define my own document style? Until now I edited the App directly.

    Cheers

      Hi Chris,

yes, you can define your own document style quite easily. You can either do within the iOS version of Notebooks, or more conveniently from your computer. Custom styles are located in a hidden folder called “NBResources/CSS” at Notebooks’ top level, and you can either access through WiFi sharing, or if you are using any of Notebooks’ sync options, you can access it on Dropbox or your WebDAV server as well.

There is a post which describes that in more detail.

      I hope this helps.

        Hi Alfons,

“NBResources/CSS” did the trick, thanks for the reply.

I am using the Mac version (1.0b14) and there seems to be an issue with notebook links. E.g. notebooks://show/Server/_Config-Files/etc-postfix-bounce.cf.txt
They don’t work, after clicking on them I remain in the current document, no switch to the linked document. I am using Mac OS Mavericks, latest Version.

Another thing that would be nice to have is Javascript support. This would allow me to add spoiler buttons to long code snippets and lot’s of other cool features.

I am also missing the option to attach files to documents. In the above example I wanted to link to a long config file because it is to big to include in the document, but a better solution would be to just attach the file to the document.

One last feature that would be nice to have is to insert images into markdown documents from the clipboard. This already works for formatted documents, so why not add it to markdown documents too.

That’s a big list and I hope I could inspire you to consider some of the suggested features. I really like your product 😉

        Kind Regards
        Chris

    Hi Notebooks,
returned after a while to the app, discovered the mac-app.
Everything’s fine but one thing: how can I import formated text into the app (from pages e.g.), when I paste it, all attributes (bold, italic) are gone.
    Cheers Juergen

      Hi Juergen,

if you are using copy/paste to get the text into Notebooks, please make sure to paste the text into a formatted document. This should work fine (as I just verified). – The result could also be influenced by the selected font in Notebooks, because some fonts don’t exist in bold or italic faces.

      I hope this helps.
      Best,
      Alfons

I am using Notebooks on iOS (iPad and iPhone) and have a sync setup with a webdav server and it works fine between the devices. However when I try and setup the webdav server on Mac it mounts correctly, but when I add the /Notebooks directory it does not seem to find it – any ideas ?

      Hello Neil,

are you trying to mount that Webdav server from Finder? Does it make a difference whether you use “Notebooks” or “notebooks”? Is the Notebooks folder at the root of your Webdav server, or could it be that you need a prefix like “Documents” or something like that?

I have just started using Mac V1.0b14 and am not seeing spell checking. Is there some setting I’m missing? I’m on an iMac w/ OS X 10.9.1

      Hello Jim,

Notebooks uses the global spell checking settings that you have set in Mac OS preferences. So if Notebooks does not highlight misspelled words, open System Preferences > Language & Text > Text and check the box labeled “Correct spelling automatically”.

First, thank you. The ability to use Notebooks on my Mac as well as my iPad really makes a difference. I use the iPad on the road, the Mac when in the office. Having them completely interoperable (through Dropbox) makes this a much used app.

Is there a way to create a PDF file from a formatted document on the Mac? I take notes as markdown and then create a formatted doc — which I would then like to send as PDF to colleagues. My workaround is to create the PDF from the formatted doc on my iPad, where it is easy and quick to do. But — it would be nice to be able to do the whole operation on the Mac.

      Hello Bill,

thanks a lot for your feedback, great to hear you like the “Notebooks suite” 🙂

Currently there is no way to create a PDF from a formatted document in Notebooks/Mac directly, but you can do that through the print dialog: open your document and type cmd-P (or select “Print” from the File menu), but instead of printing, select an option like “Mail PDF” or “Save as PDF” from that PDF button in the bottom left corner of the dialog.

      I hope this helps.

    Hi Alfons,

using NBResources/CSS to store my own styles worked, thanks for the hint.
I am using Notebooks with markdown documents as a personal wiki and sometimes I write tutorials on how to install certain server software which involves long config files. It would be nice to have a feature that allows me to attach files like that to a document. My workaround/solution was to create a new document for each config file and link to it in the original tutorial. But it seems that links do not work in my version (Mac Beta 14) By not work I mean that I can click them, but Notebooks does not change the document, nothing happens.

I noticed it is possible to add pictures from the clipboard to formatted documents. This is nice, but it does not work in markdown documents. Please consider to add the feature to markdown documents too.

Another feature wish would be the possibility to include Javascript in templates. I tried to add some JS to my own style, but that did not work. I guess you disabled it in your browser engine. JS would allow users to enrich their documents by adding spoiler buttons, tabs or accordions.

One last feature wish: Jump to the last edited position when switching to markdown preview. Once a document is longer than two pages scrolling really gets annoying if you work on the lower part of the document.

All in all I really enjoy working with Notebooks, keep up the good work.

    Kind Regards,
    Chris

      Hi Chris,

thanks a lot for your requests and comments.

      – You are right about the internal links in (plain) Markdown files; we will take care of them for the next update.
      – Same with inserting images from the pasteboard (this is simply an omission…); at the moment you can work around this by dragging an image to the desktop and then dragging it into the Markdown document while editing.
      – JavaScript may be more complex; we have not explicitly disabled it, but the web view may have specific requirements which are not met in Notebooks. We’ll look into it.
      – Remembering the last edited position is another missing piece and an open task on our list.

I hope we get most of that into version 1.0.

      Best,
      Alfons

    Hello Alfons,
Congrats from Brazil for the Awesome app. Just for feedback, there is a bug with background patterns in the Mac app. The text doesn’t fit the lines properly, problem not seen in the old versions. Also, there is no way to come back to ‘no pattern’ option after you active one of them.

Concerning the new and awesome iOS version, I wonder if the option to “use default font for Lists” could make the font size not so huge. Since I use default font size in 20pt, this make the list font incredible huge in iPhone. The default font size of the lists are too small for me, but if I turn on that option, the list became way too big. I would love to customize the fonts size of lists, not using apple dynamic type thing.

    Thank you,
    Regards,
    Julio

      Hi Julio,

thank you for your feedback, good to hear you like Notebooks!

      – Which OS X version are you using? Does it make a difference if you select another font? (Mavericks’ changed a few things internally and we had to work around these, but we *thought* that line the alignment would be ok now…
      – To remove the background pattern, just set a “Background Color” instead.
      – You are right, large font sizes can impact the readability of the lists; we’ll see how we can best address that.

      Best regards,
      Alfons

Thank you for your response, Alfons.

I’m using Mavericks and changing the font doesn’t seem to affect the alignment of patterns. But I find something that affects. Pressing the ‘Enter/Return’ throw down the page affects the alignment and make them eventually correct. Actually, pressing the ‘return’ moves a little bit the pattern itself.

In addition to that, the first line at the top of the page seems under/behind the format bar. Every new characters you insert in a new note are half covered by the above bar.

        I hope this could help,
        Best regards,
        Julio.

PRINTING FORMATTED DOCUMENTS. When I select the File->Print option for a plain text document, I get, as expected, a print dialogue that allows me to save the document as PDF. Of course, this is just a plain text version, which, in my case, means a document with the asterisks and so on used in Markdown.

HOWEVER, when I convert that plain text document to a Formatted Document and go to print that (which is, of course, the version I really WANT to save as PDF), I DO NOT get a print dialogue, which means that I cannot save it to PDF (or print the document).

    This seems like a bug.

      Hi Bill,

thank you for the report. You are of course right, the “Print…” command from the File menu seems non functional. We will look into it.
Fortunately, the keyboard shortcut cmd-P works as expected and shows the print dialogue, which then allows you to save as PDF.

      Best,
      Alfons
