In January 2020 we released Notebooks 10 as a paid upgrade from Notebooks 8. At the same time we discontinued Notebooks 8 and removed it from the App Store. This means that there cannot be any updates to Notebooks 8 any more. Users of Notebooks 8 should have been notified about the availability of Notebooks 10 at regular intervals.

When Apple released iOS 14 in September 2020, it introduced many improvements and changes. One of these changes has the negative effect that Notebooks 8 is no longer able to open and display formatted documents. That not only affects formatted documents, it also affects the formatted version of Markdown documents, highlighted search results in plain text and a few other areas.

We could not anticipate this change nine months ago, and since Notebooks 8 has been discontinued, we have no way to address that issue and post an update, unfortunately.

Current users of Notebooks 8 have the following options now:

  1. Upgrade to Notebooks 10, which is the current and maintained version of Notebooks. It runs fine on iOS 14 and can automatically migrate your documents from Notebooks 8(.11.5). So within a couple of minutes you can continue to use your documents in Notebooks 10.
  2. Another option would be to refrain from upgrading to iOS 14 and stick with Notebooks 8 until you are ready to upgrade to Notebooks 10.
  3. While Notebooks 8 is unable to display formatted documents, your documents are still intact. So you could use any of Notebooksconvert or duplicate as options to save the formatted documents as plain text, for example. This would at least give you access to the contents of your documents.
  4. If you already upgraded to iOS 14 and are not ready to move to Notebooks 10, you can use any of Notebooks‘ export or sync options to get your documents to your computer or a cloud service, from where you can access them as usual.

We are really sorry about that situation, and had we been able to anticipate it, we would have tried to address it back then…

      Hallo Stephan,

      Alfons

Hi, I have Notebooks 8 for iPad and it stopped working after iOS 14.1 upgrade.
If I purchase the $9.99 Notebooks 10 now, will it automatically replace my Notebooks 8, and will all my existing data automatically port into Notebooks 10?

      Hi Paul,

Notebooks 10 is a separate app, so it won’t replace Notebooks 8. – The first time you launch Notebooks 10 it will ask whether you want to migrate your documents (and the most important settings), and within a few seconds you are set.

You find all the details about that in a separate post about Notebooks 10

      Best,
      Alfons
